Since the earliest days of my music career, I've been a partner and supporter of Compassion International. Now more than 25 years later, I am even more committed and more passionate about the life changing work they do.
Every year I'm blessed to travel and see firsthand the amazing work they do. Before every trip I'm a little hesitant to go. But every time, the Lord meets me - in all those places, in all the children, in all the workers at the projects, all the parents. Traveling with Compassion has become an integral part of my faith journey. God has used it to continually make me aware of my need for Him.
These days there is rarely a weekend that passes that doesn't find me sharing the amazing work of Compassion. Sometimes it's standing on a stage looking out on thousands of faces and other times I find myself in a room with a few dozen smiling faces. Either way my goal is the same - to provide people with the opportunity to change a child's life through the amazing work that Compassion does around the world.
If you'd like to find out how you can make a difference in the life of a child, then do what I do: sponsor a child through Compassion.
If you were to run into Geoff Moore on the street and start up a conversation, you would feel as though you’ve known him for years. He possesses a laid back charm that is inviting, comforting and one that you want to be around. One could say that his songs hold those same traits; they draw you in with a warm welcome and keep you company with intriguing conversation and engaging melodies.
Few artists can say that they have had a career in music for nearly three decades, toured the world, and sold over 1.5 million records. Fans of Geoff Moore are well versed in his musical catalog and they will be thrilled to hear that his new album, "Saying Grace", is set to be released independently on August 30, 2011. After a four year hiatus from recording, Geoff is back with his most personal album to date.
Throughout "Saying Grace" one can’t help but hear that Geoff’s voice is soaked with wisdom. The experiences he’s lived through, particularly in the past few years, have had time to settle into his heart and mind, and the result is a perspective that comes only from the grace of time passed, life lived, and a God who blesses those who remain faithful through all manner of difficulty. And just as one steps back to survey their work completed the overall theme woven throughout "Saying Grace" is one of thankfulness.
“The way Geoff sounds on this record, it’s like he’s across the table from you, telling stories, offering reflections, and inviting you into the conversation,” shares producer Don Chaffer. “It’s the way the writing & recording sessions felt too. Really.”
"It's not every day you get to step into the studio with someone who's records inspired you when you were a kid, just beginning to explore music,” shares Jeff Pardo, who co-produced "Saying Grace" with Don Chaffer. “Working with Geoff is one of those things that I never thought would happen, but I'm so glad it has."
"Saying Grace" is actually as real as it seems. During the writing and recording of the album, Geoff (who wrote or co-wrote all the songs on the album) and Don would sit together over meals and talk about their children, and how they hope that the “Story of Love” is the last thing on their kids’ hearts when their parent’s lives are said and done. They unfolded their stories to one another, and marveled at the fact that, in the midst of some of their most painful experiences, when they were at their weakest, their faith seemed the strongest almost despite themselves, and that “The Wonder of Kindness” was woven through it all.
The connection that Geoff shares with his fans through his music can be seen through early sales of "Saying Grace". In March of 2011 Geoff did a soft release of the album in Canada while on tour with Stephen Curtis Chapman where he sold over 5,000 copies of "Saying Grace".
This year also marks Geoff’s 25th anniversary with Compassion International as an advocate for their child sponsorship program where Geoff has directly helped over 50,000 children find sponsors.
“Geoff is as trustworthy as his voice makes him sound, and as peaceful as his songs make you feel,” said Chaffer. “One day after Geoff had left the studio, Billy, (drummer on this album) joked that he wanted to find out whether Geoff would be open to adopting him and his wife. ‘I just want to be around that guy more.’ So, if you have the sensation that maybe, if you could just sit down with Geoff over coffee, you two would really get along, you’re probably right. I bet you would.”
Chaffer shares a heartwarming story regarding the process of writing “Made To Love You.” “It started with a piano part and melody that Geoff and co-writer, Jeff Pardo, had from a writing session, but there were no words. Geoff sat down with me and said, ‘I want to write a song that I can sing to God, and my wife, and my children, all at the same time and…’ he paused. ‘I think it’s about how ‘I was made to love’ them.’
“Over the next couple hours—as the emotions and ideas flowed—the sense of love for God and family was palpable. It’s wonderful when this happens, when everything disappears, and the song becomes a thing unto itself.”
A few days later, on Valentine’s Day, Geoff pulled his wife and daughters into his home office, and gave them each a rose, and said, “I wrote this song for you, and I want to play it for you.” As they listened, the girls cried. The song spoke something to them that’s often difficult to find the words for.
So much of life just scoots by unnoticed. To have these sacred moments together is a gift. Geoff’s moment with his family will now make its way into the hearts of other families. That’s what it’s all about.
Geoff's new on-line store offers exclusive content and offers that you won't find anywhere else, including his live shows. He is working to digitize and make available his entire cataloge (including his early work on the Benson label) which will only be available here. After 25 years and over 20 albums to his credit, Geoff continues to pursue his hearts passion - Being a voice for The Poor and Oppressed. From his earliest songs to his latest project "Saying Grace" Geoff believes God has given him a platform to to write and record songs that make Him known, and then travel and sing those songs, using the platform that they create to be a voice for the poor and oppressed who have no voice.
Being a Christian artist is my job. Everybody's job can be a ministry, but not everybody's job is in full-time ministry. Because I feel like mine is, my calling is central to all I do in my music life. I have never believed that being a Christian who is a musician makes you a Christian artist. I have many friends and co-workers who are followers of Jesus that make a living in mainstream music. But, for me, I make Gospel music. Every song I write, sing or record in some way is about the "Good News." I guess the older I get, the more I value every moment I have to make Jesus known and not miss a moment of what He has for me.
I'm honored to share with you a few of the highlights of this journey God has allowed me to travel.
Everyone has their favorite Geoff Moore song and we thought it would be fun to keep a small number of these in rotation here on Geoff's Classic Jukebox. Possessing little more than a deep, gravelly voice and a three-song demo produced by a childhood friend, an avid outdoorsman left the comfort of his Michigan home and the security of the family business to pursue the long-shot of making it in Nashville's music industry. Twenty-seven years and twenty-six albums later Geoff Moore can look back now knowing he made the right choice, hearing God's voice through the clamor of life.
Moore's first demo, recorded in 1983 with Billy Smiley (Whiteheart) producing and a then-unknown Michael W. Smith playing keys, was the initial trigger that launched his unexpected career as an artist. The youngest of four, Geoff lost his father while he was studying business administration at Taylor University
in Indiana, and he fully expected and planned to step in to head up Moore Iron Works following graduation. But after a short stint with the family business, he and his wife Jan felt led to pack up for Nashville, though it was far from an easy decision. "Leaving the steel business was a big deal for us. Not only did it represent security but also the expectations of my family. The carrying on of the work after my father's death weighed heavy on us. But it was what we needed to prepare for the road ahead. We made a big leap and sacrifice to pursue music, and it gave us the passion and desperation we would need."
That sense of desperation turned into a career that's thrived for more than two decades, literally taking Geoff and his music all around the globe. While most of his career was spent recording and touring with his band The Distance, Geoff decided to go the solo route in the late '90s, returning to his earliest roots in music. "I literally learned to sing sitting in the large communal showers at Taylor with my roommate playing Christian tunes and me reading the lyrics from album covers. Our reputations suffered a bit on campus for the 'shower room sessions' but the porcelain reverb was worth it… Even back in the band days, almost all my songs were written on acoustic guitars. These days my music still has rock sensibilities, but it's more acoustic based. It is as important as ever to me to be authentic and relevant. I want to make great modern music by digging into my roots and drawing from the amazing experiences God has afforded me and by learning and growing from the new artists I get the honor of working alongside. But I never, ever want to be something I'm not."
For Geoff, listening is an active endeavor. In addition to time spent in study, prayer and the discipline of "being still," he also finds God communicating through his personal, professional and ministry relationships. Throughout his career, he has taken younger artists on the road, providing the first national touring opportunities for Audio Adrenaline, Out of Eden and Big Tent Revival among others.

In 2001 and 2003 respectively, Geoff & his wife Jan journeyed to East Asia to adopt Anna Grace and Ashley Rose.
“Nothing has shaped me more since then than the adoption of the girls. It has worked its way into every corner of our lives. Less sleep, more laughs and literally, a constant amazement that God could love us all this much to allow us to be a family. I remain convinced that adoption is the great metaphor for the Gospel. Not a single day goes by that at some point I don’t think about the wonder of God’s adoption of me into His family. Anna asked me a while back if Jesus knew her when she was a baby in China and if He knew where she was. I think of that every time I sing ‘He Knows My Name.’
There are many great organizations that provide resources for those looking to provide a forever family for a special child. While I can't speak about them all, I can attest to the wonderful work of these two organizations. If you would like to find out more information regarding adoption, either of these two organization are excellent resources.
Nowhere does Geoff more clearly hear the voice of God than through
his ministries to the least of these. Through years of travel and touring, Geoff has been an eager and fervent voice for Compassion International and their work with children in need. Compassion has given me the opportunity to regularly see the world, as it really is, by allowing me to travel with them and meet the children that they serve.
The song ‘Every Single One’ is specifically about the work of Compassion, but many of my songs have been shaped by the experiences they have afforded me.
Stared into this heart of mine
A memory burned inside my soul
One that never has let go
I looked into the face of need
The least of these stared back at me I’ve seen Jesus in the eyes of all His daughters and sons
Every single one
In the past few years Geoff has also traveled and served with several other organizations that are sharing the love of Christ through meeting the physical and spiritual needs of people all around the world.
From the beginning in 2003, Geoff has waked along side his dear friends Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman as they began their vision of creating a ministry to aid in providing orphans with a forever family. They witnessed many families who had the desire but not the financial ability to adopt. Originally named after the Chapman's first adopted daughter, Shaohannah Hope Chapman, Shaohannah's Hope has grown far beyond the initial vision of helping a few orphans find homes.
In 2009, after changing the name to Show Hope, this organization has seen an amazing explosion in growth. From a six-story caring facility in China, equipped to provide surgeries and medical care to special needs orphans, to multiplying the effects of the adoption grant program by assisting churches in setting up their own adoption funds, Show Hope continues to expand its remarkable worldwide impact.
Today Show Hope is dedicated to engaging the church to care for orphans and reducing the financial barriers to adoption. They focus on providing adoption aid, orphan care and programs focused on mobilizing individuals and communities to care for orphans.
In the summer of 2009, the Chapman's and Moore's made a very special trip to China. They had the privilege of taking their adoptive daughters to their birth place in China, allowing them to experience the culture of their heritage.
In addition to seeing the country and its sights, the girls had the opportunity to share the love of Christ with some precious little ones awaiting their forever family.
If you'd like to know more or become involved in the amazing work of Show Hope, please following the links to find out more and begin making the difference in the life of a child today.
This past summer Geoff traveled to Brazil with Christian Missions Unlimted, an organization whose singular purpose is to support local Brazilian churches by providing them with a permanent church home. Their mission is best expressed in the words of their founder, Chuck Conner Jr. "Build Churches in Brazil where the Gospel will be Preached and
Souls will be Saved, and lives will be changed until Jesus comes".
Since their beginning in 1973, CMU's goal has been to partner with local U.S. churches to raise the funds to purchase of the required building materials as well as sending teams from these churches to go and provide the labor for the construction. This last summer CMU celebrated a significant milestone, the construction of the 300th church.
Thanks so much for your support of Geoff's ministry and his music. We have made every effort to provide as much information as possible here at Geoff's site.
